New York and the US Economy

Attending a workshop organized by LBSNAA in conjunction with Columbia University at New York's Park Central Hotel, I cannot but be affected by the level of activity in New York.

The US economy certainly looks good. The Times Square area is buzzing with activity and seething with people. The atmospherics and life seems to be going on even on working days beyond 10pm. Certainly New York is distinctive, creative and original. But is this truly representative of the US economy. Some feel it is not, because about 30 percent of the population is free-floating consisting of tourists from all over the world. What the US economy needs is more consistency and skill development at the middle and lower levels of the population. With essentially excellent infrastructure and great systems, it can still stay ahead of the competition for the next two-three decades. But what after that.....?

Have seen the Abba Broadway show, "Mama Mia"....value for money. Why cant we create a Broadway around Mandi House, by combining and restructuring the FICCi building, the various State Bhawans in that area and further improve the existing drama institutions, Lalit Kala Academy, Sriram Centre, Kamani etc so that plays are running all around the year?
