Well-known former bureaucrat,environmentalist and urban planeer.
He is popularly known as the 'architect of new Bhopal' for the urban planning concepts he
introduced in the city. Today, he runs the National Centre for Human Settlement and
Environment, a think-tank on urban planning and environment.
As an IAS Officer he has held a number of senior posts under the state government in the
State of Madhya Pradesh and in the federal government.
He graduated in Economics from the Delhi University and obtained his Masters Degree in
Economics from Cambridge University in 1956.He has won the UNEP award for implementation of
desertification control program in 1994-95, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998.
