LBT in Maharashtra

Implementation of LBT, Local Body Tax, ha brought the entire Maharashtra to a standstill. Last month traders went on a two week long strike, leaving the citizens in a flurry. This time again they are on a indefinite strike. There have been meetings going on, dharnas, protests, but to no avail. Thank fully this govt ordered to let the grocery and medicine shops to remain open.

The Supreme Court has also refused to grant stay on the implementation of LBT. When asked, one lawyer on terms of anonymity informed that any municipal corporation in the state can levy tax on the import of goods in the form of LBT, Cess or Octroi under Section 127 (2)(aaa) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations (MMC) Act, 1949,” he informed.

But as per the norms, Government of Maharashtra now has to obtain the permission of the president of India to impose Local Body Tax in the state. Earlier it was the privilege of the local bodies themselves to do so. Sadly, the state government has gone ahead and implemented Local Body Tax without obtaining the president's permission, it must be informed that the Centre's intervention has been sought in a bid to do away with LBT. This has made the traders and the local unions angrier and frustrated.

Neither side is willing to compromise and this has left an Adam admi nowhere. For how long this logjam will last no one knows. Grocery shops and the departmental stores are doing great business, selling goods at double-triple rates, while a daily wager is helpless even for a penny.

Will any politician come out and help him? Its probably a question, we all know the answer of.
