V.S. Achuthanandan: Guard against ?Gorbachevs
In what appears as an oblique reply to Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan?s ?waves in the bucket? remark during his speech at the conclusion of the ?Nava Kerala March? in Thiruvananthapuram recently, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Saturday said ?many great oceans, in the physical universe as well as in social life, have gone dry.?

Speaking after inaugurating welfare schemes for pravasis here, Mr. Achuthanandan said: ?The Soviet Union was a great ocean. Its strong waves had paved the way for many social changes in countries such as India. Unfortunately, the entry of Mikhail Gorbachev resulted in the drying up of the great ocean of the Soviet Union. The buckets of water drawn from the remaining ocean could tell a different story now. People should be vigilant to protect our oceans from Gorbachevs,? he said in Thrissur.

Mr. Vijayan had said that if a bucket of water was taken out from the sea, there would not be any waves in that. The waves were created only when water was in the sea.

The Chief Minister said the nexus between the ?land mafia? and political leaders was running a parallel economy in the State. If sun rises at midnight, their faces would be revealed. These mafias have made it impossible for the common man to buy even five cents of land to build a house, he said.
