Kerala tourism to organise roadshows in London, Milan
Hit by dwindling tourist arrivals from abroad following the global meltdown, Kerala will organise roadshows in London and Milan on February four and five, besides focusing on domestic tourists.

"Recession coupled with Mumbai terror strikes saw a huge drop in tourist arrivals in December last year. From 14 per cent in December 2006-2007, the growth rate in foreign tourist arrivals fell to 1.05 per cent in December last year," Kerala Tourism secretary V Venu said.

However, unlike the manufacturing sector where the slowdown takes time to set in and turnaround, the tourism industry is very flexible and sensitive. It gets affected quickly but recovers very fast, Venu said.

"The thrust this year will be on marketing and wooing domestic tourists, especially from the southern states," he said.

"December was bad for the tourism industry in Kerala, but January is doing much better. Bookings have been restored, but it is too early to say anything," Venu told PTI here.

The working group, set up by the government to suggest ways to overcome the affects of meltdown, has suggested that there should be some reduction in the luxury tax so that destination remains competitive. However, no decision has been taken so far in this regard, he said.

The government had also recently launched a new concept -- 'Bring a Friend Home' to promote the state by non-resident Keralites.

According to Francis Paul Kandamkulathy, Managing Director of New Indian Voyagers Private Ltd, travel agents and tour operators, there has been a 60 per cent fall in the foreign tourist arrivals. Those promoting innovative products have not been affected much, he told.
