Ban Ki-Moon for 'credible' polls in Bangladesh
As Bangladesh gears up for the December 18 general elections, UN chief Ban Ki-Moon on Saturday underlined the need for conducting "most fair, objective and credible" polls to ensure a peaceful transition to democracy.?

"I have expressed my sincere hope and wish that this Parliamentary Elections will be held in a most fair, objective and credible way so that Bangladesh can have a very smooth and peaceful transition towards full democracy," he said in a brief statement after holding talks with Foreign Adviser of the interim cabinet Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury.

Ban arrived Dhaka on Saturday on a two-day visit to the country at the fag end of his maiden South Asia tour. "I am convinced that the leadership of Bangladesh's government and the political parties will have closer cooperation in this matter," the UN chief said.?

He also said the incoming elected government must consolidate the democracy reforms carried out by the interim administration to stem a recurrence of confrontational politics.?

Later at a banquet hosted by the chief adviser of the caretaker government Fakhruddin Ahmed, Ban said the current political dialogue between the government and the political parties in the process of transition must succeed.?

"But equally important is for an ongoing, constructive dialogue to take shape between the leadership of the two main political parties, so as to stabilise and strengthen the quality of democracy in this country," Ban said.?
