Achuthanandan refuses to defend Vijayan
Breaking his silence over the SNC-Lavalin corruption case in which CBI has sought to prosecute CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Wednesday did not defend his party colleague, saying he would perform the constitutional duties entrusted to him.

On the politically sensitive case a week after the CBI approached the Kerala High Court seeking permission to arraign Vijayan, also former power minister, as an accused, the CM said he had conveyed to party general secretary during his recent visit to Delhi his opinion on the political situation in the state and the decision to be taken.

While the central and state leaderships put up a staunch defence of Vijayan terming the CBI move as "politically motivated" by the Congress ahead of the coming Lok Sabha polls, Achuthanandan declined to endorse the party line and said that the matter was being examined.

"I am saying what a person is supposed to say as per the Constitution. I will perform the duties entrusted to me under the Constitution," he added.

Achuthanandan, who along with Vijayan was suspended from the party politburo for openly airing differences last year, said only the files seeking sanction to prosecute former KSEB chairman K Mohanachandran and former electricity joint secretary A Francis were before the cabinet and the same were now being examined by the law department.?
