Ban’s assurance to Nepal

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said the UN would continue providing essential support needed to complete Nepal’s peace process.

At a special session of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on Saturday in Kathmandu, Ban said: “I wish to assure you of my personal support and that of the entire United Nations system for Nepal’s political, economic, and social transition. As we do our part, I encourage you to do yours.”

Regarding the integration of Maoist combatants with the Army, he said it was the government’s responsibility. The UN would provide its expertise. Ban welcomed the formation of a committee to integrate and rehabilitate them. He said the 3,000-odd minors living in the cantonments should be discharged soon.Impressed by the CA’s inclusive nature, he said it was “the most inclusive legislative body” in Nepal’s history.
