Abhinav Bindra felicitated
“Golden child” and “Jewel of the nation” was how ace shooter Abhinav Bindra described by speakers at a felicitation function held at the India Islamic Cultural Centre here on Friday.

The Olympic gold medallist was honoured by the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who also presented him with a cheque of ten lakh for his “outstanding” achievement at Beijing this year.

Calling him the “Jewel” of the nation, Mr. Gogoi called upon the youth to try and emulate Bindra. “We are all proud of him. His perseverance and devotion to his work is exemplary. He is such a great source of inspiration to the youngsters. We have the talent to make it big but lack of infrastructure is a drawback.”

Union Minister for Heavy Industries Santosh Mohan Deb praised Bindra for his “fantastic” feat and referred to the shooter as “our golden child.”

Acknowledging the “wonderful function” by the Assam government, Bindra said, “I am overwhelmed by the kind gesture. I would love to see more and more champions from our country.”

Bindra stressed that sport was an “integral” part of India’s grooming. “I dream of seeing India become a sporting super power. It can be achieved with right vision and attitude. I am sure we would get the results we desire if we work hard towards attaining the goal.”

In a message to the youth, Bindra said, “Never give up” and promised to help nurture talent in his own humble way.
