The magazine is irregular - I get two and miss four! Hindi Edition seems to have been shelved! The hope that was kindled with the administrative change (I presume!) has still remained remote.
May be patience is the only remedy if we knew how long. God! Give me patience but give it soon please!

यह पर्व है आदर्शों के प्रति समर्पण और मर्यादाओं के प्रति संकल्प का, न कि मात्र धार्मिक जयकारों का|
आचार्य महाप्रज्ञ का लेख "मर्यादापुरुष राम और उनके आदर्श" पढ़ रहा हूँ| उनकी दो गहन अनुशासाएं मित्रों के बीच रखना चाहता हूँ|
* आज हमारे जीवन में यदि मर्यादा की थोड़ी ज़रूरत है, आत्मानुशासन की कोई ज़रूरत है तो राम हमारे सामने रहने चाहिए, राम का नाम नहीं| राम हमारे हृदय में रहने चाहिएं और अगर हम यह अनुभव करते हैं कि इसकी वर्तमान युग में आवश्यकता नहीं तो फिर राम के साथ एक अन्याय नहीं होना चाहिए - हमारे मुंह पर राम का नाम नहीं आना चाहिए| अगर ऐसा नहीं होता है तो कवि ने गलत थोड़े ही लिखा है - "मुंह में राम, बगल में छुरी"! यह किसी भगवान के साथ न्याय नहीं होता| औरों के साथ हम धोखा करते हैं, औरों के साथ गलत व्यवहार करते हैं, पर जिनको आदर्श मानते हैं और जिनको सर्वदृष्टा मानते हैं, उनके साथ कम से कम धोखा तो न करें| या तो भीतर और बाहर दोनों ओर राम को रमाएँ या फिर राम को छोड़ दें|
** मैं मानता हूँ कि राम का जब तक भारतीय संस्कृति पर, भारतीय जीवन पर प्रभाव था, तब तक वाणी का बहुत मूल्य था| जो वचन मुंह से निकल जाता, आदमी उस पर सारा अस्तित्व कुर्बान कर देता पर वचन को पलटना नहीं चाहता| यह हिन्दुस्तान की बड़ी विशेषता थी| (यह अब भी होनी चाहिए!) किन्तु लगता है कि कुछ परिवर्तन आया है, अब शायद राम रहा नहीं| 'राम निकल गया' हमारे यहाँ कहा जाता है| राम की हम भले दुहाई दें किन्तु हिंदुस्तान में राम रहा ही कहाँ है!
राम हमारी न तो प्रवंचना बने और न ही जग-छल! अगर ऐसा हुआ तो हम राम के वंशज होने का हक़ ही खोते रहेंगे| राम हमारे श्रेष्ठतम आध्यात्मिक गुरु बनें, मात्र आराध्य देव नहीं!

इस युग की बड़ी त्रासदी इस बात में समाई है कि नारी ’नारी’ नहीं रहना चाहती और पुरुष ’पुरुष’ ही रहना चाहता है। दोनों अपनी कमी जानते हैं पर मानते नहीं।
समता केवल ममता से ही आ सकती है पर अब दोनों पक्षों के लिए अपने वर्चस्व का अधिकार ही समता है।

भ्रष्टाचार - गति का या मति का, दृष्टि का या वाणी का, नीति का या निष्पादन का, कर्म का या धर्म का, दशा का या दिशा का - सर्वाधिक अपकार करता है शिष्टाचार का जिसे मानव-संस्कृति का मूलाधार माना जाता है।
आजकल अशिष्ट व्याख्यानों और मंतव्यों का कोलाहल लज्जाजनक स्तर पर व्याप्त हुआ है, सो भी समाज के कुलीनों और अग्रगामियों द्वारा, कुत्साओं के कूजन की तरह। इनके बीच एक और हेय दंभ उभरा है - राष्ट्रवाद और भ्रान्त धर्मानुग्रह का - जो उनके पोषकों की हां में हां न करे, वे न तो जैसे राष्ट्रीय नागरिक हैं और ना ही आस्तिक। यह रूढ़ मति का मूढ़ भ्रष्टाचार शिष्टाचार की सारी मर्यादा रेखाएं लांघ चुका है।
उचित ही लगने लगा है कि नई पीढ़ी इसमें पूरी तरह से रुचि विरक्त हो कर अपना भविष्य रचने में संग्रह पथ पर विश्व मे कहीं भी बस लेंगे के भाव से बढ़ रही है। अब बात है व्यष्टि के निर्माण के बीच खण्डित होती समष्टि के कल्याण पर प्रश्नवाचक लगने की।
भय है कि स्वतंत्रता के ७वें दशक में ८वें दशक की चिन्ता का। क्या भारत एक नागरिक क्लब भर बन कर रह जाएगा?

SHIMLA-KALKA HIMALAYAN QUEEN EXPRESS
For 70 plus, with grown up married children and young grandsons, a journey on narrow gauge in a remodelled train through the hilly tracks and caves was like keeping up brightly with age. Yes, the younger ones felt excited in the beginning and impatient in the end but for me, with the seasoning of age, it was a perfect experience of joy and flowing life. The small peaceful stations running by almost at an elbow distance made the vast crowded and mongered metro-stations to which may tourists were accustomed disposable in concurrent reflection.
The only regret was - why not preserve the heritage look of the train with added modern facilities? The only token that was apparent in the train (Himalayan Queen) consisted of small overhead wooden racks. If the train could be painted with Himachal's folk culture replicas, it would have been a fantastic gift of understanding the terrain.

“FROM ROYAL EXTRAVAGANZA TO SCHOLARS' SOLEMNITY”
Should one have a taste for history and interest in the matters of growth of a nation, this place will be more than a tourist attraction.
The English Crown Heads used the place (Vice Regal) for some thing like 15 days in summer to shift their Capital here at a colossal cost of carrying the men and document and found time to have dinners, balls and golf (as the guide explained). The arrangements would be massive over such a huge terrain. King's vanity has always been a crush on people!
The Treaty for Granting Independence was finalized here and the Peace Formula between India and Pakistan was also worked out here on the two plank round table. Ultimately, the scholar 2nd Vice President of India very gracefully dedicated the place for Scholars in Advance Research of Humanity, the entire first floor of this majestic natural wood erected maisonette has been secured as the Residence of 50 Scholar Researchers in Humanity with no access for visitors. On the ground floor too, the earlier Ball Room, Dining Hall and ancillary areas have been reserved for scholars' library (said to be holding something like 2 lakh volumes) in solemnity, out of the reach for the visitors.
The Lobby is enchanting and the photo exhibition in the gallery impresses the serious while it serves the walkway in a mesmerized mood for the tourists. That's why the VICE REGAL now stands appropriately renamed as THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES.
The huge and reasonably well maintained lawns and parks add attraction to the place but repairs and maintenance work scattered around was an eye sore.

Recently, we visited Shimla and near by areas. Here is a travelling reflection :
29 March 2013 - A day of cool walks on the beautiful Mall of Shimla in morning as well as in evening and long drives through the lofty hills and mesmerizing greenery all around. We had an hour long horse riding too before enjoying the touch of Tatta Pani Hot Springs at the Rafting Point over river Sutlaj.
A thought came pointedly, have the material facilities, available to travellers made the charm of Nature secondary?
The simplicity and sincerity, the honesty and homely behaviour of hilly people seems to have been adulterated by cosmetic effect of high commercialization of tourism business.
Was happy to learn that life is generally peaceful, the educational level has come up in remote places too and girls are liberated from traditional taboos. Most of them dream of professional studies as well.
Being the Old English Capital of India, one can observe the legacy of British heritage - rather aping of it by the natives!
Shimla charms all the same and possibly its calm beauty will call us here again.

मेरे छह दशकों से अनवरत डायरी के रूप में लिखे जाने वाले दैनिक निशा चिन्तन को मैंने १९९१ में एक नाम श्रृंखला दी "यायावर की डायरी से झरे कुछ तृण, कुछ पात, कुछ फूल" और हर बुहार का एक अलग से नाम दिया। २०१३ की बुहार का नाम है "यात्रा अनवरत है अभी"। उसमें अंकित कुछ चिंतन आप यहां पढ़ चुके हैं। नाम के उद्दीपन में मेरा एक गीत आपके साथ बांट रहा हूं - मेरी अनुभूतियों के प्रति आपके सखा भाव के लिए -

मंथन मंच की 121वीं गोष्ठी रविवार में "हमारी यथार्थवादी सोच और संकुचित होती मानवीय संवेदना - स्व-केन्द्रित और भौतिकवादी प्रक्रिया के परिणाम" विषय पर परस्पर विस्तारण में कई महत्त्वपूर्ण बिंदु उभरे। सारे सत्य यथार्थ में बद्ले जा सकते हैं पर सब यथार्थ सत्य और श्रेयस्कर नहीं हो सकते (प्रेम मोहन)। प्रकृति के विरुद्ध हो कर यथार्थवादी नहीं हुआ जा सकता (पदमसिंह)। सुविधावाद को यथार्थ बना कर दोहरे मापदण्डों में जीना संवेदना छीनता है (धर्मेन्द्र मालवी)। विरोधी यथार्थों के बीच टूट बिखर रही है हमारी सहभागी संवेदना (सूरज कुमार)। विज्ञान-तकनीक का लाभ कैसे मिले जब हमारा राष्ट्रीय चरित्र न हो? विस्मय की बात है ना!
नई पीढ़ी के पास एक मुखर शैली है, भाषाई चातुर्य की अभिनव भंगिमा है, रोचक श्रोतव्य और दृष्टव्य उपादान और तकनीकी साधन हैं।
वे प्राय: वादर हैं। उनके पास तय्यार संवादों के अचूक कोश हैं।
उनके पास आवेश हैं, उन्मेष हैं, विद्रोह हैं। क्या कहने के कर्तव्य से अधिक अपनी बात कहने के अधिकार हैं।
फिर भी उनके पास गहरी वेदना है। वे अपनी बात किसको कहें - उनको कोई समझ ही नही पाता।
संवाद से कटी वादर नई पीढ़ी!
मैं तो पुरानी पीढ़ी का हूं। न तो इतना कहता था - न ही कहते रहने के अवसर थे। मौन में भी अच्छे संवाद हो जाते थे। यह वेदना भी इस तरह अनुभव नहीं हुई कि कोई सुनता ही नहीं।
तब भी मेरी आंखों में उतर आता है उनकी आंखों का गीलापन!

Lately, I and my wife Savita have adopted two government schools in the rural outskirts of our locality. One is a primary school up to class five with 35 students enrolled and the other one is a middle school with 180 students enrolled.
Most of the students in both the schools come from very poor families being children of daily wage earners and labour class. There is a strange contradiction of facts. Most students are poorly dressed, walk long distances to reach schools and are allured because of mid-day meals. Most teachers are well dressed and they come to school with their shining vehicles, some with cars too; some speak fluent English and are quite qualified; they get paid better than most private schools. The face saving fact of grace is that teachers are mostly dedicated. But a frustration looms large. Many a time classes are clubbed and go at the same level that hardly inspires interest in what is being taught. Teachers are frustrated because there students are most irregular - parents take their wards on work for long periods of absence ... teaching is really meaningless. On the top of it, the teachers' creative time is spent in filling up all kinds of government paper work and they are sent on deputation of all sorts - counting the number of buffaloes in the designated areas!
It's about two months of our personal and individual initiative, presence of two of us twice a month in each school in the alternate schedule of Learning Point and Talent Promotion Point, there is a noticeable change in the environment. It is not our tiny gifts and symbolic rewards that make children gleam in happiness and teachers relieved and inspired but as the teachers put it, the academic brightness is apparent and children are a little more regular. We have not done great with our very meagre material sources - we only try to see children happy and consolidated in their positive approach to learning. Obviously, they are more disciplined, have better etiquette and polite demeanor than their urban counter parts and some of them realize that learning better is the only means to save them from their miseries. We have so far worked only to fill them with a sense of positiveness and that makes our small contribution a matter of great satisfaction.

३ मार्च, रविवार की मंथन मंच की १२०वीं गोष्ठी में विषय "क्या मिटेगा धार्मिक अधिनायकवाद, अभिजात्यवाद और आधिपत्यवाद जो राष्ट्रीय गौरव से अधिक विसंगति का कारक बन गया है" पर चिन्तनबोधी चर्चा हुई। गोष्ठी के परिचालक प्रोफ. प्रेम मोहन लखोटिया के अतिरिक्त धर्मेन्द्र मालवी, पुनीत शर्मा, सुरेश वकील, मुकुल शर्मा और सविता लखोटिया ने प्रखर परन्तु स्पष्ट व्यक्तिगत स्वीकृति के साथ अपने विचार रखे। गोष्ठी की स्पष्ट सहमति थी कि धर्म है एक सर्वमान्य संहिता समता और ममता की, यह एक नीतिगत अनुशासन है शुद्ध आचरण का, साधन है मानवीय चरित्र के स्थापन का - इसका प्रयोजन वर्गीकरण और विभाजन का कतई नहीं हो सकता। धर्म की बाह्य प्रक्रियाओं का पालन ही धर्म का अनुसरण नहीं है। धर्म के निर्वाह में अधिनायकवाद, अभिजात्यवाद और आधिपत्यवाद एक प्रकार का सामन्तवाद तथा महन्तीकरण है जो अपने आप में धर्म का विलोम भी है और विकृतिकरण भी। धर्म आत्मा को मुक्त करने का मार्ग है न कि मानव को रीति कलापों में बांधने का। यदि धर्म सुपथ-विरक्त हुआ है तो आस्था सहित खंडन करना भी हमारा कर्तव्य है।

जनता में कुछ चुप हैं,
कुछ अकड़ झगड़ कर कहते हैं -
हम से कुछ भी मांगो नहीं,
हम को केवल दो।
मालूम नहीं कहां गया ख़ज़ाना,
सरकारी बंदों ने लूटा
या लुटा दिया!
जब दो हज़ार देते हो
तो वह कुछ भी नहीं,
दो हज़ार मांग कर तो देखो!
अरे निकम्मो!
अपने सपने हम
टुकड़े टुकड़े में देखें -
यह आदत भले हमारी पर
तुम खा़मोश रहो!

आलोचना पंडित

"अर्जन", "वितरण" और "समर्पंण" का
संस्कार नागरिक होने का
